Miami Dade College’s Freedom Tower Goes Purple for Lupus Awareness Month May 17

Miami, May 14, 2019 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will illuminate its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower purple at sunset Friday, May 17, in support of the Lupus Foundation of America, Florida Chapter’s Put on Purple Day.  It is a special day during Lupus Awareness Month when local communities rally to bring greater attention to lupus by wearing purple and lighting buildings, monuments, and fountains purple.

Lupus, which impacts an estimated 100,000 Floridians and 1.5 million Americans, is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body. Lupus is more pervasive and more severe than people think and has an impact that the general public doesn’t fully realize. Despite the widespread prevalence of lupus, research on the disease has remained underfunded, relative to its scope and devastation.

The Freedom Tower will be among 14 landmarks in Florida as they Light Up for Lupus and set the national record for most landmarks lit purple during Lupus Awareness Month.
