Miami Dade College’s Confucius Institute Presents Largest Chinese New Year Celebration in MDC History

Miami, January 29, 2016The Confucius Institute (CI) at Miami Dade College(MDC) will celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Monkey with an array of cultural and educational events throughout the month of February. With a commitment to provide cultural enrichment opportunities for all South Florida residents, the CI will present activities at six MDC campuses, making it the most extensive and colorful Chinese New Year celebration in MDC history! Unless noted, all events are free and open to the public.

The Chinese New Year falls on February 8, which will see the Chinese zodiac sign change from sheep to monkey, the ninth animal of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs. For the past five years, the CI at MDC has hosted Chinese New Year celebrations that have enriched the cultural lives of students, faculty, staff, and surrounding communities.

This year’s highlights will include traditional and contemporary Chinese performing arts, including Chinese fan dance and Tibetan dance, instrumental music with Chinese violins and flutes, folk and pop songs by Chinese singers, Tai Chi, and calligraphy demonstrations. MDC students studying Chinese language will join the celebration and international fashion shows. The CI will also provide outreach resources in global education to assist students obtain scholarships for China study abroad programs.
