Miami Dade College’s Banned Books Week Celebrates Censored and Challenged Books

Miami, Sept. 12, 2018 – In an effort to highlight the value of free and open access to banned and challenged books, the Learning Resources Department at Miami Dade College (MDC) will once again celebrate Banned Books Week, Sept. 23-29 with various events at all eight MDC campuses. Events are free and open to the public.

In addition, MDC libraries will feature a special collection of censored books on display and available for check out. The featured books have all been targeted for removal or restrictions in libraries and schools throughout the United States. Banned Books Week kickoff with a discussion on the history of book censorship. Refreshments will be served.

Banned Books Week kickoff with an exciting interactive display of banned and challenged books. Snacks and coffee will be served.

Censorship: A Banned Books Week Discussion led by Faculty Librarian Steve Kronen, a published author and award winner, including the Cecil Hemley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America.

The Literati Book Club will discuss The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The young adult novel follows a protagonist drawn to activism after she witnesses the police shooting of her friend.

Screening: Classroom Classics, To Kill a Mockingbird.  A 30-minute video overview of the beloved book, followed by a discussion on censorship and the first amendment led by Learning Resources Associate Director Theo Karantsalis.

Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out: Students are invited to read passages from banned books and share their thoughts on censorship. The footage will be shared on Social Media.
