Miami, Jan. 13, 2023 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will once again provide free tax preparation services to low-income individuals, the elderly and non-English speaking residents throughout Miami-Dade County as part of the Internal Revenue’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). Limited services will be provided from Feb. 3– April 14 at six MDC campuses throughout the county.
Launched 30 years ago, the VITA program originated at the Wolfson Campus and was later extended to other campuses. Students are trained to prepare free individual income tax returns for other students, their families and the general public. They are supervised by MDC Miguel B. Fernandez School of Global Business, Trade and Transportation professors and experienced coordinators, who review the returns before they are filed electronically with the IRS.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to offer these services throughout Miami-Dade County by reactivating Hialeah, Homestead and Padron Campus locations this year,” said Dr. Ana M. Cruz, MDC Wolfson Campus School of Global Business chair.
Requirements to have taxes prepared through the VITA program: Bring a social security card and social security cards of any dependents to be claimed; Photo ID; W-2 earnings statement; 1099 MISC (for self-employed only); 1099 INT (interest income); 1098T tuition statement, 1095A health insurance marketplace statement, copy of last year’s federal return, and any documents pertaining to expenses to be claimed.
Federal income tax returns must be mailed postmarked no later than Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
