Veterans’ workshop helps open doors to jobs in cruise, aviation, and hotel industries
Miami, May 4, 2016 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) West Campus will host the nationally-renowned Edge4Vets workshop to help veterans learn how to translate their military experience into tools for an “edge” in the jobs marketplace on Tuesday, May 24.
“Edge4Vets is a wonderful opportunity for veterans to feel connected to their community and participate in a workshop with top Human Resources employers. MDC West is proud to have partnered with Tom Murphy and Edge4Vets”, said Dr. Roger Ramsammy, MDC’s West Campus President.
Representatives from Edge4Vets’ partner companies, led by Carnival Corporation as well as companies recruited by Miami-Dade Aviation Department, and the Greater Miami and the Beaches Hotel Association will serve as “workshop mentors” and offer feedback and guidance to the veterans as the program teaches them how to identify and apply their military strengths, including strong core values and skills to gain a job that can lead to a career, and set them on the pathway to employment in South Florida.
Edge4Vets was developed by Tom Murphy, founder of the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham University. An employee training expert, Murphy is the author of “Reclaiming the Sky: 9/11 and the Untold Story of the Men and Women who Kept America Flying,” which shares the on-the-job courage of aviation workers on 9/11 and beyond. The lessons in resiliency he learned from profiling heroes of 9/11 led him to develop Edge4Vets. Also, at one time Murphy was a vice-president at St Thomas University and created the Miami Nice program which trained 25,000 Miami taxi drivers in courtesy between 1985 and 1997 and became a national model for customer service enhancement in the US. Murphy will lead the Edge4Vets workshop at MDC.
As part of the MDC Military Friendly initiative, West Campus recently opened a Center for Military and Veteran Student Success to serve military connected students who attend the campus.
