Miami, August 14, 2023 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will welcome its third cohort of Rising Scholars with an induction ceremony at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 14, at MDC North Campus. MDC’s groundbreaking Rising Scholars program provides financial assistance, support services and resources to graduating high school seniors to ensure their academic success. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Nelson L. Adams, chairman of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Jackson North Medical Center.
Dr. Adams attended Emory University in Atlanta, where he completed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology in 1982. He moved his private practice from Mobile, AL. to Miami Shores, FL. in 1986. In South Florida, he became vice president of network development for Sheridan Healthcorp and served as medical director for Greater Miami OB-GYN Associates at Sheridan Healthcorp. In 2004, he founded Access Health Solutions and currently serves as its president and chairman. He was sworn in as the 108th president of the National Medical Association in 2007.
In addition to his current role at Jackson North Medical, he is the Sunshine State Health Plan board chairman, trustee emeritus at Barry University and a member of the Orange Bowl Committee. Dr. Adams is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Meharry Medical College, Miami Art Museum, St. John Community Development Organization, Overtown Youth Center, Miami Foundation, Health Foundation of South Florida, among many other organizations. He is a proud mentor in the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project.
The Rising Scholars program’s structured experiences inside and outside the classroom equip students with the skills, resources and support to achieve their academic and professional goals. Participants receive free tuition for up to 30 credits plus fees per year, book stipend, laptop computer, and scholarship opportunities. They will also have access to short-term, career-focused credentials that increase earning potential, degree options, internship opportunities, academic advisement and resume assistance.
