Miami Dade College to Present Facts vs. Fiction Surrounding Medical Marijuana

Miami, March 28, 2017- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Benjamin Leon School of Nursing Lecture Series will present Facts vs. Fiction Surrounding Medical Marijuana: Translating the Clinical Reintegration of a Botanical Medicine, Wednesday, April 5, 5:30 – 8 p.m., with Dr. Jeffrey S. Block, the Florida Medical Association’s designated expert on botanical medicine. The event is free and open to the public.

As Florida’s legislators currently consider the approval of laws that support Florida’s Constitutional Amendment 2, knowledge concerning access and social issues surrounding medical marijuana has become more important than ever.

Well-documented as a botanical medicine for more than 5,000 years, the cannabis plant’s biochemistry, mechanisms of action, and anecdotal versus evidence-based safety and efficacy profiles have recently become the subject of intense scientific and legislative scrutiny.  Block will discuss the ethno botanical and cultural use considerations of a plant now known to contain therapeutic balances of phytocannabinoid and terpenoid compounds that are challenging some of the world’s foremost researchers and awaiting clinicians.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Block is a board-certified anesthesiologist who is additionally fellowship trained in pain management and addiction medicine. He is a nationally respected authority in both the health-care and natural earth sciences concerning botanical medicine education and research. He was chosen as the Florida Medical Association’s designated expert on botanical medicine. Block was also Florida’s only physician appointed to structure the framework and author physician education as mandated by Florida’s Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014.  He was Florida’s only physician appointed by Florida’s Surgeon General to prepare the rules of law for the Department of Health.
