Miami Dade College to Partner with Lennar Foundation to Provide Construction Training Program

Miami, Aug. 21, 2019- This fall, Miami Dade College (MDC) will partner with the Lennar Foundation to launch the MDC Builds program at Homestead Campus.  The free, 10-week certificate program prepares workers with classroom instruction and hands-on training for entry-level construction jobs.

Employment for construction laborers and helpers is expected to grow 12 percent between 2016-2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This program is designed to create a career pathway that improves the participants’ economic and social mobility.

Beginning Oct. 14, participants will receive training in the areas of carpentry, electrical systems, plumbing, worksite safety and other essential skills needed in the ever-growing Florida construction industry.

Participants will also earn the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30 Training Certificate which is designed for entry-level construction workers to help them recognize, avoid and prevent occupational hazards in the construction industry.

The program will be offered at no cost to participants, which is aligned with MDC’s goal of providing opportunities to all who seek it. MDC Builds will also provide students with transportation and meal vouchers. Key components of the program will be mentorship and individual advisement. Applicants must be at least 18 years-old and unemployed or underemployed.
