Miami Dade College to Illuminate Freedom Tower in Colors of the Colombian Flag

Miami, July 11, 2019 – Miami Dade College (MDC) to illuminate its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower yellow, blue and red, in celebration of Colombia’s Independence Day. The iconic Freedom Tower will showcase the colors of the Colombian flag at sunset, Saturday, July 20.

This year marks the 209th anniversary of the signing of the Act of Revolution, an event that led to the eventual independence of Colombia from Spain. July 20, 1810 was established as the official national day by the Colombian congress in 1873, as it was the patriotic date that remained in the collective memory of the newly formed nation.

The tri-color banner became the country’s official flag in November 1861. The flag features three horizontal bands of yellow (double-width), blue and red. The colors of the flag are commonly interpreted as yellow symbolizing sovereignty, harmony, justice as well as the richness of the Colombian soil; blue represents the country’s sky, its rivers and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, both of which border Colombia. The red is indicative of the blood spilled by patriots in the battles to gain freedom, as well as love, power, strength and progress.
