Miami, March 13, 2019 — Miami Dade College’s (MDC) National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower will be illuminated green at sunset, Monday, March 25, for National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, in support of Samantha’s Purpose.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Cerebral Palsy is considered the most common physical/motor disability in children. March 25 was designated “National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day” by the U.S. Congress.
The illumination at Freedom Tower is one of many activities taking place throughout Miami-Dade County as part of a national campaign called “Light Up Cerebral Palsy,” led by Make Lemon Aide Foundation for CP.
Samantha’s Purpose’s mission is to raise awareness about Cerebral Palsy, provide funding through grants for programs, schools, and camps that are fully inclusive and support and improve the quality of life of children with this disability and to provide guidance and support to families helping them navigate the maze of insurance, government programs, education and doctors. The organization also advocates for inclusion of those with Cerebral Palsy throughout the community. Samantha’s Purpose was co-founded by Jose “Manny” Garcia and Michelle Coffey-Garcia, the parents of Samantha Garcia, who lives with Cerebral Palsy. MDC’s Freedom Tower was the first building to ever be illuminated green for Cerebral Palsy Awareness in 2014 and continues to participate every year.
