Miami, April 12, 2022 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will illuminate its historic Freedom Tower blue and green at sunset, Friday, April 22, for National Donate Life Blue & Green Day to bring awareness to organ, eye and tissue donation as a way to save lives.
This observance offers hope to more than 100,000 men, women, and children across the country waiting for a lifesaving transplant. In Florida, there are more than 5,300 men, women, and children waiting for an organ transplant. On average, 20 people die each day due to lack of available organs. In addition, every nine minutes a new name is added to the transplant waiting list. Every donor can save eight lives and enhance up to 250 with tissue and eye donation.
Blue & Green Day is part of National Donate Life Month in April, a national effort to focus attention on organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation.
Registering is fast and easy with the Medical ID tab of your iPhone Health app or at DonateLifeFlorida.org and provides a way for people to make their wishes to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor known. It also provides legal, first-person authorization for organs to be donated, removing the burden of decision-making from families during an already difficult time. Joining the registry can also be done when applying for a Florida state ID card or driver’s license. For more information or to register as a donor, visit DonateLifeFlorida.org
