Miami, Dec. 8, 2021- Miami Dade College (MDC) will host its 3rd Annual Virtual Humanities Edge Undergraduate Research Symposium with daylong viewings of student projects and live presentations on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. This event is free and open to the public.
“It is truly inspiring to see how our undergraduate researchers have identified contemporary and pressing issues, posed significant research questions, and analyzed these issues using different methods,” said Dr. Michaela Tomova, MDC Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. “They have worked independently through this process, with the support of faculty mentors and assigned librarians, and created original papers, projects, and artwork to demonstrate the findings of their research.”
The symposium features independent research projects by MDC students participating in the Fall 2021 Humanities Edge Undergraduate Research Program (HE-URP). The Humanities Edge is generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of a three-year Community College Pathway Partnership grant program that MDC and Florida International University (FIU) were awarded first in 2017 and again in 2020.
“These students have tackled some complex and controversial topics through original research and have been selected to present at the symposium,” said Kirk Paskal, Grant Director of The Humanities Edge at MDC. “They cover a wide spectrum of research topics and questions in a range of humanities disciplines and offer pioneering insights that will resonate with all who attend.”
The Humanities Edge program values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is designed to provide scholarship opportunities in the humanities, to strengthen transfer opportunities for aspiring humanities students from MDC to FIU. It supports ongoing pedagogical and research collaborations between MDC and FIU humanities faculty and drives institutional practices to support diverse humanities majors and improved student success.
