College Signing Day is an initiative inspired by First Lady Michele Obama that promotes higher education enrollment and completion

Miami, FLApril 18Miami Dade College (MDC) will host the Reach Higher-College Signing Day at North Campus, an initiative inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday, April 26. MDC has also partnered with The City of Miami Office of the Mayor’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, a program launched by President Barack Obama to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color and ensure that all young people can reach their full potential.

“MDC prides itself in serving as an educational beacon in our community, ensuring all students have access to a quality, higher education. This event recognizes our youth’s decision to attain a higher education by matriculating at the College as they pursue their educational and career dreams and aspirations,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, president of North Campus.

This event is a collaborative community celebration and recognition of the high school graduating class of 2016 making the important decision to enroll and pursue their dreams at MDC. This celebration will continue to foster a college-bound culture within the Greater Miami–Dade County community. Keynote speakers include Congresswoman Federica Wilson and Marlon A. Hill, J.D. of Hamilton, Miller and Birthisel law firm.

Close to 1,000 students and educators from 12 Miami area high schools will attend the event to secure their admission and enrollment into the College. Seniors will stand before their teachers, friends, MDC and City of Miami community as they announce their commitment to attend college and share stories about their academic journeys and future goals. Participants will also be exposed to an interactive display of academic disciplines as well as a myriad of local industries offering students a panoramic view of real world career opportunities upon earning degrees and college credit certificates from MDC. This event will serve to motivate the seniors with a clear school-to college-to career pathway to reach their full potential.

College Signing Day is an initiative inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama to promote higher learning and encourage high school students to commit to a college or university prior to graduating from high school. She believes these events offer a unique opportunity to celebrate graduating seniors, showcase student leaders, and inspire more young people to take the first steps on their journey to higher education. The First Lady is working to rally the nation around President Obama’s “North Star” goal that by 2020, America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.
