Miami, Sept. 7, 2018 – As the nation and world mark the solemn anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) campuses will host several events in memory of the nearly 3,000 men, women, and children who lost their lives on this tragic day 17 years ago.
Please join us at these remembrance events on Tuesday, Sept. 11:
9 a.m., MDC’s North Campus, near Bldg. 4000
11380 N.W. 27th Ave.
North Campus will join forces Student Government Association (SGA) and Student Life to honor ordinary citizens, Everyday Heroes, who selflessly helped evacuate and rescue others on that day. During a time where havoc and destruction erupted, many volunteered to help others during a time of great need. Keynote speakers include United States Coast Guard’s Vice-Commander of Flotilla 38, David M. Scott, and MDC North and InterAmerican Campuses’ President, Dr. Malou C. Harrison.
North Campus is home to two steel artifacts from the World Trade Center recovered from the site and donated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to MDC. One is mounted 10 feet high with a base that represents the Pentagon. The other includes three granite columns with each side reflecting the name of a place that was attacked on 9/11.
10 a.m., Hialeah Campus, Student Life Lobby

Hialeah Campus will host a National Day of Remembrance event with guest speaker Emmanuel Louis, City of Hialeah Fire Dept. EMS Division Chief and MDC alumnus, who will discuss the tragic events of Sept. 11., and attest to the bravery of the emergency medical workers.
11 a.m., Kendall Campus, between Bldg. 2 and 3

Kendall Campus Student Life will host a remembrance event with a flag display with represent those who lost their lives in this tragic day. Keynotes speakers include, SGA President Krystal De Villiers and student veteran, Amaury Lopez. Vocal Fusion will perform.
11:15 a.m., Wolfson Campus, various locations
300 N.E. Second Ave.
Wolfson Campus will participate in the National Day of Service to commemorate the attacks on 9/11. Faculty and student led presentation will be hosted in the Chapman Center (Room 3210) on the power of unity and community. The presentation will be followed by the service project.
In collaboration with the Earth Ethics Institute and iCED, Student Life will offer students and staff the opportunity to participate in the planting of over 100 new plants at the acclaimed Miami Culinary Institute garden which directly serves our students on campus and benefits our Shark Pantry. Student leaders will also lead a “Random Act of Kindness” activity to remind others pay it forward.
InterAmerican Campus, Bldg. 6, Student Life Multipurpose Room, from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

InterAmerican Campus will transform its center area into a silence space with lights representing the historic twin-towers. Faculty, staff and students to pen their thoughts on a reflective board.
West Campus (various events throughout the day)
3800 NW 115th Ave.
Red, white, and blue balloons will be displayed around West Campus with the names of the victims. Faculty, staff and students will personalize Heroes Cards to be sent to soldiers on deployment during the upcoming Holiday season. In addition, West Campus’ SGA will hold a Dialogue for Democracy and a Voter’s Registration drive.
Homestead Campus will host a letter-writing for soldiers event from noon – 1 p.m. In addition, an exhibit featuring books about the attacks will be on display until Sep. 15, at the Learning Commons (Room D101).
Medical Campus’ Student Life will be showing the documentary “102 Minutes That Changed America” in the Student Life lounge. The film will play on continuous loop.
