Miami Dade College to Host 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and Launch of App Created by Students

Miami, Nov. 5, 2019 – Miami Dade College (MDC) and the German Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Miami will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Several events will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7, at MDC’s Wolfson Campus, including the official launch of the “BerlinWall Presented by MAGIC” app, a virtual reality simulation created by students at the college’s acclaimed Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex (MAGIC).

The day’s events will begin with a welcome ceremony at 10 a.m., at the Wolfson Campus auditorium (Bldg. 1, Second floor) with remarks by MDC’s Wolfson Campus President Dr. Beatriz Gonzalez and Consul General Andreas Siegel. Mauricio Ferrazza, MAGIC chairperson, will present the student-led project, which is part of “Wunderbar together – Germany and the U.S.”, an initiative launched in 2018 to celebrate German-American friendship with more than 2,000 events in all 50 states.

On Oct. 3, 1990, Germany was re-united in freedom and peace with the consent and support of its neighbors and friends. The key moment which opened the door towards reunification was the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. Until then, the “iron curtain” had divided a city, a nation, even a whole continent and millions of families and friends for several decades.

The MDC celebration will include a reenactment of the fall of the wall next to an original piece of the Berlin Wall Way (NE Third St), which was donated to the Wolfson Campus by the German Consulate General in 2014.

A public exhibition, “From the Peaceful Revolution to German Unification,” will showcase the developments that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the transition period and reunification of Germany. Other works will include “Impressions of the Reunion,” a series of photographs capturing the celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall and Latent Fissures, photographic impressions of Jorge Andrés Castillo’s visit to both sides of Berlin in 1989, as well as a presentation of the MDC Berlin Wall app. The exhibition runs through the entire month of November at the Wolfson Campus’ Centre Gallery (Bldg. 1, Third floor).

In addition, MDC’s critically acclaimed restaurant, Tuyo, will feature German-inspired fine cuisine on Nov. 7, upon reservation, for those who wish to extend their German experience in a culinary way.  For more information, please call 305 237-3200 or www.tuyomiami.com.
