Miami Dade College to Celebrate World Refugee Day June 19

Miami, June 12, 2019 Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus, in partnership with MDC’s REVEST Program and the Miami-Dade Refugee Task Force, to celebrate World Refugee Day with an event free and open to the public on Wednesday, June 19, at 10 a.m.

The event titled “Mano a Mano, We are Building Each Other Up” will include a resources fair of Miami-Dade County organizations supporting immigrants, as well as insightful stories from successful leaders and entrepreneurs who came to the U.S. as refugees. In addition, there will be a musical performance by refugees and former students of MDC’s REVEST (Refugee/Entrant Vocational Education Services Training Program).

The activity will be attended by prominent leaders of the community, including Patti Grogan, Director of Office of Refugee Services for the State of Florida and representatives from other local organizations.

Each year on June 20, the United Nations, United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and countless civic groups around the world celebrate World Refugee Day events to draw the public’s attention to the millions of refugees worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, conflict and persecution, and to their immeasurable contributions to society.

The annual commemoration is marked by a variety of events in more than 100 countries, involving government officials, humanitarian aid workers, celebrities, civilians, and the forcibly displaced themselves.
