Miami Dade College Secretary Sews Protective Masks to Help in Fight Against COVID-19

MIAMI, April 8, 2020 –  Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Homestead Campus secretary, Georgina (Jeanie) Canavan, is using her skills as a seamstress to fight against the COVID-19 crisis by sewing protective masks from her home for local hospital workers, first responders, family members, and friends.

Canavan, secretary for the School of Engineering and Technology at Homestead Campus, is a self-taught seamstress who received a sewing machine as a gift from her husband.  A long-time Homestead resident, Canavan has worked at the MDC’s Homestead Campus over 20 years.  Her family lived through the devastation of Hurricane Andrew and she understands the value of lending a helping hand during a crisis.

Canavan is using her love of sewing to help her community.  She has made about 50 non-surgical masks and is working on 100 additional masks from 100 percent lightly woven cotton fabric.  The mom of two teenage boys is taking requests from her Facebook page, Jeanie Canavan (Jeanie Northcut).
