Miami, June 23, 2016- Miami Dade College (MDC), along with Teatro Avante, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and Miami-Dade County Auditorium (MDCA) are celebrating the 31st International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami, July 7-24, by presenting some of the best theatre companies from Latin America, Spain, and the United States in various locations in Miami-Dade County.
The festival is presenting eight productions from six countries: Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Spain, United States and Uruguay, and opens at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater on Thursday, July 7, at 8:30 p.m., with No daré hijos, daré versos (I Won’t Bring Forth Children but Poems). The performance features three ways of looking at Delmira Agustini, the first female Latin American poet to write erotic poems, who was murdered by her ex-husband in 1914. A work performed by six singing actors in which the songs, complemented by a short film, are part of the story.
The Life Achievement in the Performing Arts Award will be presented to Uruguayan actress Nidia Telles immediately following the opening performance on July 7.
MDC’s Teatro Prometeo presents Cacería (The Hunt) at the Koubek Theatre, at 8:30 p.m., on Friday, July 8, and Saturday, July 9. In Spanish with English supertitles, the performance is freely adapted by Cristina Rebull and Iliana Prieto from Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. It is directed by Joann Yarrow and Cristina Rebull.
In Cacería, gripped by collective hysteria, the town’s teenage girls, with Abigail at the head, become the prosecutors in an unjust and cruel trial. Intolerance, absolute power and ignorance make it easy for a spurned young woman to become the driving force behind a ruthless witch hunt of innocents, giving rise to treason, fear, greed and human misery.
The festival will also hold the popular International Children’s Day celebration, sponsored by Target, at MDCA’s On.Stage Black Box Theatre, on Sunday, July 17, from 2 to 7 p.m. A photography exhibit of the tragic voyage of the MS St. Louis will be displayed at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theatre. A conference on the same topic will be held on Friday, July 22, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at MDC’s Wolfson Campus, Bldg. 2, Room 2106.
The festival spans three weeks, with performances Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:30 p.m., and Sundays at 5:00 p.m. Venues include Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater, MDCA’s On.Stage Black Box Theatre, MDC’s Koubek Theatre, and Key Biscayne Community Center.
