Miami Dade College, Miami-Dade County and Amazon Web Services Partner to Host Datathon Nov. 13

Miami, Nov. 10, 2021 – Miami Dade College (MDC), Miami-Dade County and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are partnering to host a Datathon for MDC students at the College’s state-of-the-art Business Innovation & Technology (BIT) Center. This event is part of a shared vision for a seamlessly connected region where a common platform of public data fuels smart city solutions.

“We are excited to once again collaborate with Miami-Dade County and Amazon Web Services to continue developing local tech talent and building a workforce ready for the jobs of tomorrow,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega.

The datathon is an opportunity for students to gain industry experience by solving real world challenges with our region’s brightest industry experts and creating pathways for career growth. Students will use peace and prosperity-related datasets and guidance from Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Peace and Prosperity Plan to conceive potential solutions for making our community safer.

“This datathon is a shining example of private-public collaboration to drive positive change through innovation,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We are not only investing in Miami-Dade’s next generation of technology leaders – we’re leveraging local talent and open data to solve some of our community’s most urgent challenges.”

Datathon teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges and compete for a $1,500 award. The winning team will also have the opportunity to implement their idea in a DataLab through an internship with Miami-Dade County in partnership with AWS.

“Amazon Web Services is excited to sponsor the upcoming MDC Datathon. Technology events where teams can learn to work with real data sets and think of creative solutions around the theme of peace and prosperity is a wonderful learning experience for students”, said Faisal Hanafi, Director, U.S. SLG/K-12, East, AWS. “The MDC Datathon is a great example of this where students can use analytics to develop insights and solutions using tools that are cost-effective, purpose-built, and provide quick insights via automation and Machine Learning (ML) integration.”
