Miami, Nov. 6, 2019 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) women’s volleyball team, the Lady Sharks, defended their state championship title by winning the 2019 FCSAA State Volleyball Tournament Nov. 3. This is the Lady Shark’s 46th state title.

The Lady Sharks defeated the Hawks of Hillsborough Community College in a 3-1 match and now advance to the NJCAA District Tournament, set for Nov. 8-9 at the College of Central Florida, for a chance to become the number one team in the country.

During the weekend, the Lady Sharks also defeated tournament host Florida State College at Jacksonville (3-1), Hillsborough Community College (3-0) in group play, and Polk State College (3-1) in the semifinals.

“I am so proud of our volleyball team,” said MDC Interim President Dr. Rolando Montoya. “Their performance this past weekend exemplifies their dedication and I know they are going to shine even brighter at nationals.”

MDC’s Department of Athletics has an impressive track record of repeated wins and producing some of the country’s top athletes. In total, MDC teams have earned a total of 35 NJCAA national titles, including 15 in women’s sports.

The intercollegiate athletic program at MDC works in partnership with its dynamic, multi-cultural community to provide accessible and high-quality guidance and direction by keeping the needs of student athletes at the center of all decision-making. Go Sharks!
