Miami Dade College Lady Sharks Win 2016 FCSAA Volleyball State Championship!

Miami, Nov. 9, 2016Miami Dade College’s (MDC) women’s volleyball team, the Lady Sharks, have once again won the coveted National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) District/Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) State Championship title. This is the Lady Sharks’ 43rd state championship. They currently hold eight national championships.

The Lady Sharks defeated the Santa Fe College Saints 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, and 25-14). Their overall record is now 17-5, and 6-2 in conference play.

Players Massiel Matos, Camila Hernandez, Sun Wenting, and Leidy “Manuela” Vargas received FCSAA All-Tournament accolades. Matos was named MVP of the NJCAA District/FCSAA State Volleyball Tournament. In addition, Head Coach Origenes “Kiko” Benoit was named the 2016 NJCAA Region VIII FCSAA State “Mary Andrew “Coach of the Year.

Next, the Lady Sharks will head to Casper, Wyoming to compete in the NJCAA Volleyball National Tournament. The NJCAA Volleyball National Tournament is from Nov. 17-19.

MDC’s Department of Athletics prides itself in the sponsorship of academic development and promotion of sports. MDC teams have earned a total of 33 NJCAA national titles, including 13 in women’s sports.
