Miami Dade College Lady Sharks to Celebrate Ninth National Volleyball Championship on Wednesday, Nov 23

Miami, Nov. 22, 2016 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Lady Sharks will celebrate their ninth National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Volleyball Championship win with a free community homecoming event Wednesday, Nov. 23, starting at noon, at the Kendall Campus. The Lady Sharks finished their season 21-5, and number 1 in the nation and state of Florida. This is their first national championship since 2004. The team and coaches will be available for interviews.   

The Lady Sharks shutout Iowa Western Community College 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-18). With this win, MDC finished the postseason undefeated; shutting out each opponent they played. Player Massiel Matos was named the National Championship Dorothy L. Brown Most Valuable Player, and Sun Wenting and Leidy ” Manuela” Vargas were named to the 2016 Division 1 Volleyball National All-Tournament team. Head Coach Origenes “Kiko” Benoit was named the National Championship Coach of the Tournament.

MDC athletic teams have earned a total of 34 NJCAA national titles, including 14 in women’s sports. MDC has one of the most storied athletics programs in collegiate history.
