Miami, August 30, 2021 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Arts and Philosophy Department at the Wolfson Campus announces its 24th season of Jazz at Wolfson Presents, the longest continuously running free jazz series in Miami-Dade County. The new season kicks off with The Trio at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 15, at MDC Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The concerts will take place monthly through April and are free and open to the public. Concerts will take place in-person and livestreamed.
“Jazz at Wolfson Presents continues to be a place for jazz artists to present themselves and their music,” said Dr. Michael Di Liddo, program director and MDC Jazz Faculty member. “At the same time, students, staff and the community at large have access to a unique live jazz experience featuring some of the world’s top jazz musicians.”
This series is funded with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County mayor and the Board of County Commissioners through the Hannibal Cox Jr. Cultural Grants Program.

The Trio

The Trio is comprised of three veteran musicians, pianist Hal Roland, bassist Jeff Carswell, and drummer Steve Rucker from the Miami music scene who have worked together for years bringing their unique twist to jazz standards and pop tunes.

Although his music is rooted in the gospel tradition, Hammond organist Kendall Carter also draws influence from notable organists Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland and Shirley Scott. Combining these influences has allowed him to develop his own philosophy on playing the blues and keeping the groove.
Wolfson Jazz Ensembles

The Wolfson Jazz Ensembles consist of three groups of exceptional music students. The Horace Silver group takes its name from the legendary pianist and composer of the 1950s and ’60s. The Blue Note group pays tribute to the famed jazz record label of numerous groundbreaking recordings. Both groups help young musicians develop by presenting a wide range of jazz styles. The program’s most mature group, the Hard Bop Jazz Ensemble, has included some of South Florida’s finest emerging musicians. Over the years the ensemble has performed at jazz festivals in Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. The group has received DownBeat magazine awards in both composition and performance.

Flutist and composer Jamie Baum has toured the U.S. and performed in more than 35 countries at major festivals, jazz venues and concert halls. Baum has been recognized for composing by the Guggenheim Foundation, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers.

As a member of Michael Bublé’s world tours, saxophonist and composer Mark Small played major arenas in the U.S., Australia and Europe, as well as performed on several television programs including Today Show, Letterman and Late Night with Jay Leno. He was a featured soloist on both saxophone and clarinet for the Grammy Award-winning live album Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden.

Paul Bollenback

Paul Bollenback is known for his versatility, as well as for his influential 20-year stint with jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco. He has performed on more than 80 recordings as a sideman and has released eight CDs as lead artist. His latest recording with his trio, Portraits in Space and Time (Mayimba Music), was released in 2014.
