Miami, Nov. 5, 2018 – To commemorate Veterans Day, Miami Dade College (MDC) will host an array of community and educational activities that chronicle the sacrifices and accomplishments of the armed forces and veterans at each of its eight campuses. The events are free and open to the public.
Artifacts and arts from the Miami Military Museum and Memorial will also be on display. The Miami Military Museum and Memorial is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation of South Florida’s military history by highlighting historic military through education and public events. The emerging museum, which is located adjacent to Zoo Miami, hosts civic ceremonies and remembrances and serve as a site for both tourism and the large military community in Miami-Dade County. Dr. Anthony D. Atwood, a Navy veteran, is the force behind the Miami Military Museum and Memorial.

Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine Exhibit

Medical Campus, 950 NW 20th St.
Many historians have written about medical care during the American Civil War, but the participation and contributions of African Americans as nurses, surgeons, and hospital workers often has been overlooked. Learn more about those whose desire to participate in the cause for freedom led them to transcend class, education, and social position in the exhibition. Presented by the NLM, NIH and the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.
Veterans Commemoration Opening Ceremony
Nov. 7, 10 a.m.
InterAmerican Campus, 627 S.W. 27th Ave, Flag Courtyard
Opening ceremony will include the Coral Gables Color Guard and the following guest speakers: Major Eddy Martinez, United States Air Force Reservist; and Dr. Anthony Atwood, CWO3, USN (Ret), Executive Director of Miami Military Museum. There will also be a display of videos of Marines Silent Drill Team and a display of the poster, “Honor All Who Served.”
War to Wellness

This wellness workshop will discuss ways to provide holistic and mental health support to veterans and other survivors of mental, physical, and/or emotional warfare. Topics will include PTSD, Coping, and Stress Reduction.
Missing Man Table
Nov. 7-14
West Campus, 3800 NW 115th Ave.
Also known as the Fallen Comrade Table, it is a place of honor set up in military dining facilities of the U.S. armed forces during occasions such as service branch birthday balls. It is in memory of fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service-members.
Veteran’s Day Panel Discussion

Veteran’s Day originated as Armistice Day on the first anniversary of World War I, which ended on Nov. 11, 1918. In this centennial observance, Dr. Mohammad Homayounvash, Jaffer Foundation Visiting Scholar, will host a discussion featuring a panel of guest speakers.

A day of recognition honoring all who served.
Walk to the Zen Garden

Students will lead the Veterans Commemoration Silent Mindful/Reflective Walk in appreciation of the sacrifices veterans endured. Students will also conduct a poem recitation and short reading in commemoration.

Come celebrate those who fought for our country. Stop by the Missing Man Exhibit or write a thank you letter for the Veterans MDC North Display. Enjoy games, networking, and refreshments.

Post Combat Stress and Adjustment to Civilian Life

This presentation will address the psychological issues many combat veterans face upon returning from service and attempting to re-integrate into society.
