Miami Dade College Celebrates National Library Week

The Learning Resources Department at Miami Dade College (MDC) joins libraries in schools, campuses, and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, April 10-16.  This year’s theme is “Libraries Transform!”

MDC’s libraries are dedicated to transform the lives of our students through innovative educational resources and services. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

The MDC’s Learning Resources Department celebrates National Library Week with the following college-wide events:

Ongoing Events during National Library Week

  • We are collecting #MDCshelfies from students, staff, and faculty on all campuses. Submit your best photos taken at your MDC Campus Library. Send your photos to Patricia Gonzalez, pgonzal7@mdc.edu. Staff is also available to take your photo. All submissions will be posted on the Learning Resources Facebook Page, facebook.com/MDCLearningResources during National Library Week.
  • In the Game: Sport and Disability, an exhibit that chronicles events and individuals who have transformed sport and recreation for people with disabilities. From early education and habilitation efforts to highly competitive modern amateur and professional activities. Location: Medical Campus Library, room 1202.
  • The Poetry Menu, check out our collection of featured poetry books available at the Homestead Campus Library.  From Shakespeare to Paz, in English and Spanish, for children and grown-ups, we have something for everyone. Location: Homestead Campus Library, room D101
  • Book Donation, we are collecting your used or new books! Drop them off at the following location: InterAmerican Campus Library, room 1116

Monday, April 11

  • Library Staff Meet-and-Greet, see the exciting transformation of the library. Location: Kendall Campus Library, room 2117.
  • Coffee and Snacks at the Library, come help yourself to some refreshments and meet the library staff and learn about our resources. Location: InterAmerican Campus Library, room 1116, 9 a.m., and 5 p.m.
  • Library Trivia, students and faculty test your knowledge of the library and its resources. Prizes will be given to the winners. Location: Hialeah Campus Library, room 1400, noon to 1 p.m.
  • National Library Week Kickoff at Wolfson Campus, join us to kick-off an event-filled week. The first 50 students to check out an item, such as a book or DVD will receive a donut. Coffee will be served throughout the day. Location: Wolfson Campus Library, room 1216, at noon.
  • Come together @ the Library, meet the library staff and learn about the numerous e-resources available to you virtually.  We will have library crew displaying our online resources while you hang out at the Homestead Campus Be a Kid Again (BAKA) celebration. Location: Homestead Campus Breezeway, bldg. D, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 12

  • Poetry Open Mic, share your own and enjoy your fellow students and staff’s original work. Location: Homestead Campus Library, room D101, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
  • Movies in the Stacks, join us for a movie matinee along with coffee and snacks. Location: Wolfson Campus Library, room 1216, at noon.
  • Library Worker’s Appreciation Day, come show your appreciation and celebrate with the staff, refreshments will be served. Location: Kendall Campus Library, room 2117, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Wednesday, April 13, National Bookmobile Day

  • Sustainability Workshop, in celebration of Earth Day and in collaboration with Student Life, Faculty Librarian Steve Kronen will hold a discussion on sustainability. Seed packets with a special written message will also be distributed to participants. Location: West Campus Library, room 1125, at noon.
  • Library Trivia, students and faculty test your knowledge of the library and its resources. Prizes will be given to the winners. Location: Hialeah Campus Library, room 1400, noon to 1 p.m.

  • Bookmobile Day @ Kendall, the express library will be making its way from the Library to the Breezeway featuring some of the libraries best books. Location: Kendall Campus Library, room 2117, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Bookmobile Day @ Hialeah, check out some books hand-selected from the libraries popular collection as the book mobile makes its way around campus. Location: Hialeah Campus, 11 a.m. to noon.
  • Bookmobile Day @ Wolfson, check out some of our most popular books and DVD’s from our collection as we make our way around campus. Donuts will be handed to the first dozen students to check out a book. Location: Wolfson Campus at noon.
  • Bookmobile Day @ InterAmerican, featuring some of the newest additions to the library’ collection, as well as some of our best classics. Location: InterAmerican Campus Library, room 1116, at 10:30 a.m.
  • Library on the Fly, an array of popular books will be available for checkout. Location: North Campus Library, bldg. 2000, 1st floor, 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Thursday, April 14

  • Edible Books Contest, show us your creativity and submit your best rendition of a delicious “edible” book.   • What is PACER? A discussion by Theo Karantsalis, Associate Director of Learning Resources, on proper methods of accessing information and conducting research using the federal court system’s Public Access to Court Electronic Record’s database. Location: EEC Library, room 1109, 9:50 – 11:05 a.m.
  • Books are Super Hot AKA B.A.S.H., check out our hottest book selections, interact with staff and learn about the many resources available, refreshments will be served. Location: Kendall Campus Library, room 2117, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Library Staff Meet-and-Greet, coffee and snacks will be served and we will be handing out goodie bags. Come check out our collection of free donated books available to take home. Location: InterAmerican Campus Library, room 1116, at 9 a.m.
