Miami Dade College Announces Women’s History Month Events

Miami, Feb. 29, 2016 – Throughout the month of March, Miami Dade College (MDC) will present dozens of exciting, informative and fun events in honor of Women’s History Month. The events are free and open to the community (unless otherwise noted), and will take place at MDC campuses and outreach center.

Women’s History Month at MDC aims to inspire, raise awareness, and spark conversations about the profound impact women have made throughout the work, including human rights, science, literature, film, business, sports, politics, music, art, and more.

Learn about the opportunities for women in technology and engineering fields from a speaker from Girls Who Code, a national nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in these sectors.

It’s On US Video Challenge
It’s On Us is a national campaign initiative to address sexual assault on college campuses.  This video contest challenges students, as individuals or pairs, to create YouTube videos promoting awareness of sexual assault against women.  Video links should be submitted to Jorge Salinas, jsalina1@mdc.edu by Thursday, March 24.  The first place submission receives a $200 grant, the second-place submission receives a $100 grant, and the third-place submission receives a $100 gas card.  The monetary prices will be awarded on March 30, at the closing ceremony.  Hosted by Jorge Salinas.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes asks men (and women) to walk in high-heeled shoes as a way to identify the role that men play in ending violence against women.  In addition, members of the Roxy Bolton Rape Treatment Center will collect donations of packaged underwear, sweatpants, and shirts for survivors 12 and under.  Participants will be walking along with Venus Rising, a multi-ethnic women’s drums and dance ensemble.

Join us for a presentation on “Changing the Face of Medicine:  Diversity in Health Care” by Dr.  Aletha Maybank a young and highly respected physician on a mission.  Her professional and volunteer live reflect her passion to improve the quality of health and various communities.  Currently, Dr. Maybank is an Assistant Commissioner at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  Her areas of expertise include preventive medicine, food and fitness, maternal and child health, cancer, HIV/AIDS, community health, and health inequities.  She is an advocate for women and African-Americans in the medical field, and is regular contributor to magazines, television shows, and online publications.  Hosted by STEM Ladder Grant.

Famous Dominican musician Fernando Villalona “El Mayimbe” will talk about his amazing life and 45-year musical career.  His repertory always include songs that pay a tribute to women and their multiple roles in life.  Fernando is one of the Dominican Republic’s most popular and emblematic performer, making more than 20 albums of merengue, cumbia, bachata, boleros, and ballads that have entertained and touched the hearts of audiences around the world.  Join us for this memorable talk – and perhaps some impromptu music!
