Miami Dade College Announces New 2019 Summer Camps

Miami, March 4, 2019 – From creating animation to learning CSI techniques, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) unique summer camps are unmatched in variety, quality and fun! Open to kids, tweens and teens, the camps are conveniently available at MDC campuses across Miami-Dade County.

Some of this year’s highlights include Culinary at West Campus, a Latin Jazz Experience at Kendall Campus, CSI at the North Campus and Animation and 3-D Gaming Design at Wolfson Campus’ MAGIC. Students can also participate in Teen Entrepreneurship, Young Architects, Technology, Kids & Teens College, as well as the popular Wild Things Happen camp, which includes field trips, sports, reading, games and much more.

 LEGO® EV3 Robotics: Engineering and Design (Ages 7-12) $110

Design, build, program and control your robot! Working in small teams, kids will construct robots using LEGO® Mindstorms NXT Robotics kit. They can create an explorer robot to maneuver around obstacles, a robot arm which picks up objects, a snake robot which rattles and strikes, and a robot batter that hits pitches.

ArtSouth Creative Arts Summer Camp (Ages 7-15)

ArtSouth’s Creative Arts Summer Camp provides youth with a multi-disciplinary program. Campers attend a full day of training with all materials and supplies provided. Participants work under the professional guidance of local artists, certified teachers and professionals in the fields of visual arts, dance, music and performance.  Health Care Explorers (Ages 12-17) $159

Students will learn patient care skills, body mechanics, medical terminology and how to take vital signs and perform basic first aid.

Kids & Teens College Summer Program (Ages 7-17) $110 – $210

Kids and Teen College provides an educational yet fun environment where kids and teens can customize their schedule and choose classes they like the most. Campers can choose from a wide variety of weekly programs and activities such as culinary, Lego robotics, computers and technology, science and nature, modeling, public speaking, art, reading, photography and so much more!

Tennis Camp Half Day (Ages 6-17) – $135

In this fun-filled week kids will be exposed to cutting-edge tennis training methods. Campers will remember a special mix of instruction, team competition and off court activities for the rest of their lives. Sessions will include stroke development, game strategies, match plays and much more.

Wild Things Happen Summer Camp (Ages 5-11) – $157

Children will enjoy activities such as computers, field trips, indoor and outdoor games, swimming and arts & crafts. Lunch and snack included.

Latin Jazz Experience Summer Camp (Ages 11 – 17) – $185

Music enthusiasts in grades 6-12 will have fun while developing their jazz improvisation skills, improving music theory skills and understanding of jazz and Latin jazz styles. They will also have the opportunity perform in small groups and jam with some of Miami’s top jazz instructors. All instruments are welcome: piano, bass, guitar, drums, woodwind, brass and strings.  Camp held at Hammocks Middle School.

 CSI (Ages 13-17)

CSI and Procedural Justice Camp offers youth grades 9th through 12th the opportunity to participate in six weeks of structured activities at the Miami Dade College North Campus. The camp supports academic success, social-emotional learning, skill building and family engagement. Successful completion of the 180 contact hours leads to earning three college credits, which can be applied to degrees from Miami Dade College School of Justice. Skill building will focus on specialized areas including college readiness through the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) course and the College Ready! Program, civic engagement activities, family engagement and social emotional learning. This program is sponsored by the Children’s Trust. STEM Camp: Robotics, Coding and Drones (Ages 14-18)

Campers will learn the principles of coding, Vex Robotics, basic physics and drone programming and flying.  Funded by the US Department of Education, STEM Engine Grant (Educate, Intern and Employ), P031C160143. Mystery & CSI Camp (Ages 8-12) or (Ages 13-17) – $299

In this suspenseful mystery camp, campers will utilize deductive skills in a race to investigate. Players will work in teams to decipher STEAM riddles, collect forensic evidence, and interrogate suspects to solve the mystery! *Lunch and before and aftercare available for additional fee.

Arts and Improv (Ages 8-12) or (Ages 13-17) – $349

Have fun learning sculpture, painting, and drawing techniques to spark your imagination and creativity. Use various media such as acrylic paint, watercolor, charcoal, air dry clay, pencils and more. Develop your public speaking, teamwork, and leadership skills as you learn how to think on your feet with our improvisation classes. Show off your talent at our final exhibit/show. Lunch and before & aftercare are available for additional fee.

Cultivating Foodies (Ages 8-12) or (Ages 13-17) – $299

If your child loves or is interested in cooking, this is the camp for them. This camp teaches students the basics of cooking, avoiding cross-contamination, kitchen safety and much more. In conjunction with the MDC’s Culinary Institute, the program will focus on healthy recipes as well as promote healthy eating habits. Before and aftercare are available for an additional fee.

Mandarin Culture Camp (Ages 8-12) – $235

Develop cultural awareness and heighten your knowledge of global communities through interactive lessons and activities. Learn language basics to communicate in Mandarin Chinese, learn about the art of Chinese calligraphy, participate and host tea ceremonies, and learn martial art skills. Lunch and before and aftercare are available for an additional fee.

English Boot Camp for Kids (Ages 8-15) – $399

This course is designed for kids from the ages 8 to 15 years old who have had little or no exposure to English. The students will learn basic English grammar and develop basic speaking and listening skills. Lunch and before and aftercare are available for an additional fee.

Telemundo Summer Camp (Ages 14-19) – $395/week or $695/ two weeks.

High school students will be encouraged to embark in a transformational experience through “Animation” and “3D Game Design.”  The camp will focus on storytelling, 3d modeling, coding, game design, character animation and creating interactive simulations for Virtual and Augmented reality platforms. Animation Camp (Ages 14-19) – $395/week or $695/ two weeks.

Participants will get an introduction to character design and animation using Autodesk® Maya®, the application used by top video game development and film studios. This class is project based; students will have the opportunity to complete a portfolio of their own animation. Basic computer skills are required. Check in is from 8 to 9 a.m. Activities will take place at MDC’s MAGIC complex.

3D Gaming Design Camp (Ages 14-19) – $395/week or $695/ two weeks.

Students will learn the premier 3D modeling, animation, effects, and rendering software packages on the market. Using the industry-standard, intuitive toolset featured in Autodesk® Maya® realistic 3D models will be created and prepare them for game play in a gaming engine. Skills development will focus on the use of Autodeskm”Maya” and Adobe Photoshop. Basic computer skills are required. Check in is from 8 to 9 a.m. Activities will take place at MDC’s MAGIC complex.
