Miami Dade College Announces New 2016 Summer Camps!

Miami, April 25, 2016 – From building robots to playing Latin jazz, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) unique summer camps are unmatched in variety, quality and fun! Open to kids, tweens and teens, the camps will be available at six MDC campuses, the MDC’s Koubek Center, and Hammocks Middle School.

Some of this year’s highlights include American Sign Language, at the North Campus, and the A Team Camp, an academy of teen entrepreneurship and management at the InterAmerican Campus. Returning favorites include Animation, 3D Gaming Design, CSI Miami, LEGO® EV3: Robotics Engineering, Latin Jazz Experience, Kids/Teen College, Camp Wannadraw, as well as the popular Wild Things Happen Camp and Kidscene Camp, traditional summer camps where children participate in field trips, sports, reading, and games, and more. Prometeo Theatre will also offer once again Prometeitos Summer Camp, its popular acting and performing arts camp in Spanish at the Koubek Center.

Latin Jazz Experience Summer Camp (Ages 11 – 17) – $185

Music enthusiasts in grades 6-12 will have fun while developing their jazz improvisation skills, improving music theory skills and understanding of jazz and Latin jazz styles. They will also have the opportunity perform in small groups and jam with some of Miami’s top jazz instructors. All instruments are welcome: piano, bass, guitar, drums, woodwind, brass and strings.

LEGO® EV3: Robotics Engineering Level (Sessions for ages 7-11 and 12-16) – $119

This class is an introduction to building and programming robots using the new LEGO® Mindstorms NXT Robotics System. Structured lessons and challenges will introduce intermediate level construction, use of sensors, and programming topics, using the new NXT intelligent brick with servo style motors and ultrasonic sensor. In pairs, students build robots and program them with a computer to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve challenges.

A TEAM (Academy of Teen Entrepreneurship and Management) – $220

This week-long summer program introduces teens to the world of entrepreneurship. More than just a fun summer camp, they will learn valuable skills – including business planning, presenting, teamwork, project management, and professional networking – to one day launch their own business, start a non-profit or simply be more prepared for the business world.

American Sign Language (Ages 6 – 12) – $165

Discover how awesome American Sign Language can be through games, theater, storytelling, and other creative activities! This summer learn finger-spelling, numbers, signs, vocabulary, and the use of facial expression, body movement, and mood to communicate with friends and family members of the deaf community or hearing individuals who know ASL. You will gain valuable knowledge and understanding of hand signing and enjoy meeting talented deaf artists who will share their art and fluency in sign language conversation. Join our five day summer camp of fun filled cool language communicating experience!

Chinese Culture and Language Camp (Ages 6 – 12) – $179

Kids can learn to master the basics to communicate in Mandarin Chinese. Language instruction is embedded in learning about Chinese culture through hands-on, interactive and fun activities. Calligraphy workshops teach campers the art of calligraphy in China and how to produce letters and symbols. Chinese tea ceremonies are a key element of Chinese culture and campers will learn how to host one. They will also discover the history of Chinese martial arts and learn martial arts skills.

Animation Camp (Ages 14-19) – $395

Campus includes an introduction to character design and animation using Autodesk® Maya®, the application used by top video game development and film studios. Skills development will focus on the use of Autodesk ”Maya” and Adobe Photoshop. This class is project based; students will have the opportunity to complete a portfolio of their own animation.  Pre-Requisite: Basic computer skills. Students may use labs while waiting for pick-up.

Prometeitos Summer Camp, presented by MDC’s Prometeo Theatre, offers kids the opportunity to play while learning acting, singing, dancing, art crafting, and creative writing.
