Registered Apprenticeship programs continue to pave pathways to economic mobility.
Miami, Jan. 26, 2024 – Miami Dade College (MDC) and the University of Miami (UM) have partnered, with support from CareerSource South Florida, to launch the new Project Manager Apprenticeship Program with employer Related Urban Construction, LLC, which blends classroom instruction with paid on-the-job training designed for individuals with little to no experience in the occupation. Apprenticeship programs offer full-time employment, competitive wages, free tuition and employer-provided benefits.
Sponsored by MDC, students enrolled in the Project Manager Apprenticeship Program will complete coursework facilitated by UM’s College of Engineering. The launch of this new program expands MDC’s existing partnership with the University to include the Building Automation Technician Apprenticeship Program with employer partners Johnson Controls, Inc., Albireo Energy, LLC and Siemens Industry, Inc.
“South Florida’s development boom is reshaping the local landscape. There’s no better time to embark on a career in construction than now,” said Pratim Biswas, dean of the College of Engineering at UM. “We are proud to partner with Miami Dade College and private sector companies, like Related Urban Construction, to train apprentices with the skills they need to thrive in the construction industry, make full use of new innovative digital technologies and leave their mark on our community.”
MDC is the first academic institution in Florida to receive the designation of Program Sponsor by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) and named Apprenticeship Ambassador by the US Department of Labor. Offering 21 occupations, MDC has the highest number of Registered Apprenticeship Programs of any other educational institution in the State of Florida. As Program Sponsor, MDC is authorized to register occupations, employers and apprentices to participate in Registered Apprenticeship and Pre-apprenticeship Programs. Apprenticeship Programs enable employers to develop and apply industry standards to training programs for registered apprentices that can increase productivity and improve workforce quality. Apprentices who complete a registered apprenticeship program are accepted by the industry as Masters in their field.
