Miami Dade College Again Joins Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation for #BeKind21 Challenge

MDC to kick off college-wide campaign with Born This Way Foundation on Wednesday, Aug. 28

Miami, Aug. 22, 2019 – Miami Dade College again joins Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation for its 21 Days to Be Kind Challenge (#BeKind21 Challenge) to encourage students, staff and the community at large to build habits that foster a culture of kindness and promote wellness.

The 21-day campaign will kick-off on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Wolfson Campus with representatives from Born This Way Foundation, including MDC alumna Shadille Estepan, who serves as Born This Way Foundation’s Communications and Outreach Manager. The event will unveil MDC’s 21-day calendar and bring together 21 student-led organizations from across the college to pledge their commitment. The event is free and open to the public.

Other events during the 21-day challenge will include yoga & meditation, pack & share a meal with someone, a conversation on mental health stigmas, messages of gratitude and giving back.

“When we are kind to one another, we strengthen and enrich the community we live in,” said Dr. Lenore Rodicio, MDC Executive Vice President and Provost. “At MDC, we value kindness and inclusion, and we are proud to partner with Born This Way Foundation on this important initiative to be kind and create a meaningful conversation around mental health. It benefits us all.”

Inspired by the idea that habits are formed by repeating an activity for 21 consecutive days, the challenge calls on MDC and Miami communities to practice an act of kindness each day from Aug. 28 – Sept. 17. MDC is one of many initiative partners across the country, from schools and nonprofit organizations to corporations and sports teams.

“We were overwhelmed by last year’s response to our #BeKind21 Challenge.  This year, we hope to build on the excitement we saw from thousands of people and dozens of partner organizations,” said Cynthia Germanotta, co-founder, and president of the Born This Way Foundation.

A growing body of research has demonstrated the tangible benefits of kindness, for communities and for individuals, including mental health. Participants are encouraged to pledge their participation in the challenge.
