Miami Dade College Accepting Applications for MDC Builds, Free Online Construction Certificate Program

Miami, Sept. 25, 2020 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Homestead Campus and the Lennar Foundation have teamed up to offer MDC Builds, a free 10-week online certificate program that prepares students for entry-level construction jobs. Register now for online classes starting Monday, Oct. 12.

Employment for construction workers is expected to grow 12 percent by the year 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. MDC Builds is designed to create a career pathway to prepare a skilled labor force in this growing Florida industry.

The program offers flexible morning and evening classes, as well as individual advisement, mentorship, transportation vouches and meals. Students will receive a combination on classroom instruction and hands-on training in carpentry, electrical systems, plumbing, worksite safety and other essential skills. They will also earn the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30 Training Certificate, which is designed to help entry-level construction workers recognize, avoid, and prevent occupational hazards in the workplace.

MDC Builds will be offered at no cost to those who qualify. Applicants must be at least 18 years-old and unemployed or underemployed.
