Goals NOT Guns Forum will address the Epidemic of Youth Gun Violence in our Community
Miami, May 18, 2017- Following the recent, successful Second Annual Goals NOT Guns 5K Run/Walk/Pedal event, City of Miami Commissioner Frank Carollo will host the Second Annual Goals NOT Guns Forum, on Tuesday, May 23, at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) historic Tower Theater, in partnership with its nationally renowned School of Justice.
Last year’s forum objective was to develop comprehensive policy priorities to mitigate youth gun violence. This year’s event will further delve into the consequences of gun violence, to better understand the effects of youth gun violence through the eyes and experiences of different individuals in our community.
The second annual forum will include:
- First Responders Segment: Youth gun violence through the eyes of first responders
- Summer Youth Activity Information Segment: Useful and timely programs for youths during summer
- Survivors of youth gun violence segment: Hear first-hand from survivors of youth gun violence
- Segment featuring Connect MIAMI: Join us for an authentic connection experience
A former police officer, certified public accountant, father, MDC alumnus and elected official, Commissioner Carollo will lead the event.
“To continue our initiative’s growth and success, we must remain proactive – questioning not only what the root cause of gun violence is, but also taking the opportunity to learn from the past in order to lead a legacy of change for the future,” said Commissioner Carollo. “That is what this year’s forum is bringing to light.”
It is important to continue removing the silos and barriers in which many stakeholders operate, for increased collaboration. In that spirit of increased collaboration, this year’s forum will also feature Connect Miami, an opportunity to partake in an authentic connecting experience. By convening a working group that focuses on the delivery of resources to targeted communities through advocacy, education and service enhancements, true progress can continue to be made.
