Miami, Nov. 19, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Opera/Musical Theatre Ensemble will perform its rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance,” a comic opera in two acts, Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. The performance is directed by MDC’s director of vocal studies Amy Davis and choreographed by Don Jeanis.
Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular and beloved show since its premiere in 1879, “The Pirates of Penzance,” is a rollicking, funny story of a band of soft-hearted pirates. The plot concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born on the 29th of February, and so, technically, he has a birthday only once each leap year. His indenture specifies that he remain apprenticed to the pirates until his “twenty-first birthday”, meaning that he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.
Songs will be performed by students from the MDC’s Wolfson Opera/Musical Theatre Ensemble. The cast includes Max Riguard as Frederic, Alex Leon as The Sergeant of Police, Alexander Ruiseco as Major-General, Nikita Orlhac as Mabel, Aurora Wynter as Ruth and Otto Montenegro as The Pirate King. The production also features Aaron Bravo, Francisco Ortega, Monika Lambe, Jennifer Svedberg-Snyder, Chae Jeong Ahn, Alexander Brand, Danniel Giraldo, JImena Guevara, Elisa Hidalgo, Jerry Killlingsworth, Kevin Martinez, Ericka Rivas, Kariangelis Rivas, Marlon Rodriguez and Tylee Hooker.
The MDC’s Wolfson Opera/Musical Theatre Ensemble is an intensive program for those interested in pursuing a career in musical, operatic, and theatrical performances. The program expands the student’s level of stage experience providing the necessary skills to become a successful leader in today’s music industry.
