Miami, August 8, 2017 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) West Campus will present Under the Sea… Inside the Pool, an exhibition by artist Henrik Welle, inspired by his passion for underwater photography. The exhibition, co-presented in collaboration with Contemporary Art Projects USA and curator Mariavelia Savino, opens at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 28. The opening reception will feature a conversation with the artist. The exhibition is free and open to the public during campus hours and will remain on display through Dec. 11.
Under the Sea… Inside the Pool consists of several unique underwater photographs of a Coney fish species in the Turks & Caicos, taken with a Cannon 50D, 60mm lens at 25 feet depth. The exhibition will also include underwater images of corals and aquatic plants. Another wall of the gallery will be dedicated to present four black and white staged photographs taken inside a pool.
Born in 1970 in Paderborn, Germany, Henrik developed an interest for the ocean and animal world from a very young age. After studying marketing and political economy for a few years in Hamburg, he pursued his true calling, realizing that he was happier in the water than on land. Immediately after discovering scuba diving, his passion for the seas and marine life was solidified. He relocated to Fort Lauderdale in 1998. In the U.S., he perfected many diving specialties, such as wreck and rescue diving, underwater photography, video and dive master. Welle has more than 400 recorded dives around the world, including Egypt, Maldives, Hawaii, Florida, Mexico, Venezuela, Bonaire, Turks & Caicos, Dominican Republic and Bahamas.
The underwater world has always been Welle’s greatest passion. His nature macro photography depicts a surreal and alien underwater world unknown to many, which evokes feelings of serenity, calmness, sensuality, and intrigue. Welle’s mixed media stories portray a combination of his beliefs in energy, time and the undeniable effect it has on humans and their everyday life moments. By turning the world upside down and playing with the reflection of the water surface, he creates an effect that conjures up the surreal and inspires imagination.
