Legendary Brazilian actress Sonia Braga will participate in Q & A after the first screening
MIAMI, Nov. 2, 2016 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Tower Theater will present the Florida premiere of the film Aquarius on Friday, Nov. 4, at 5:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. There will be a Q & A with legendary Brazilian actress Sonia Braga, the film’s lead role, immediately following the first screening at 5:45 p.m. She will introduce the second showing at 9 p.m.
Directed by the Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendoça Fihlo (Neighborign Sounds), Aquarius is the mesmerizing story of Clara (Sonia Braga), a 65 year old widow and retired music critic who is the last resident of the Aquarius, a historic building built in the 1940s in the upper-class, seaside Boa Viagem Avenue, Recife. Clara has pledged to stay in at her place until her death, but a real-estate company has acquired all the other apartments and has other plans the Aquarius. As a cold war with the company ensues, Clara’s memories of loved ones and cherished time in her beloved home start to flood her mind.
Due to a very murky and politically-intoxicated atmosphere, the Brazilian Film Academy declined to select it as the official Brazilian submission for 2017 Oscars as Best Foreign Language Film. The surprising decision, however, has not damaged the film’s prestige as one of the most important international films of this decade:
“At the center of this emotional maelstrom is the 65-year-old Braga, herself a living legend and bridge to the past. In a film of many turns, her performance – weathered, proud, sensuous, fragile – captivates and brings us into her world.” – Bilge Ebiri, Village Voice
“Sonia Braga gives the performance of her long, storied career in Aquarius.” – Mike D’Angelo, AV Club
“An engrossing, intimate character study that manages to encompass plenty of universal truths, Aquarius is a look at the end of things that is vibrant and bursting with life.” – Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair
Famous for her other notable performances in Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, The Kiss of the Spider Woman and Moon over Parador, Braga won the International Cinephile Society (ICS) Award for Best Actress for her leading role in the film.
Aquarius will be playing at MDC’s Tower Theater, 1508 S.W. Eight St., for one week only.
