Miami, Jan. 16, 2020 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus, in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Urban Debate League (MDUDL), will host the Fifth Annual Aspiring Changemakers Debate Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
More than 50 MDC students, attorneys, and community leaders will come together for the tournament, and more than 150 students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) are scheduled to participate.
“The North Campus is an ideal host partner for the Tournament, and we’re pleased to collaborate with MDUDL in a movement to empower students to think critically about real world problems and to render solutions through debate,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, president of North and Padrón Campuses.
The MDUDL is the local chapter of the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL). MDUDL seeks to cultivate a community of learners among urban public-school students in Miami, focusing on teamwork, cooperative learning, academic excellence, critical reflection and individual student growth. The goal is to empower students to become confident, successful citizens, who are advocates for themselves and their community and who successfully graduate from high school, pursue college degrees and become active leaders in their community.
“I am passionate about this program because it empowers young diverse leaders in our community to engage in public discourse. I am blown away every time I see these remarkable students debate substantive policy issues ranging from whether the federal government should fund public schools to whether the U.S. should sell weapons to foreign countries. We need their voices in the public discourse, perhaps now more than ever,” added Corey Gray, MDUDL Board Co-Chair, Associate at Boies, Shiller, Flexner LLP.
