Miami, March 7, 2019 – MDC’s North Campus will host its annual Miami International Festival of the Arts (MIFA), a week of events dedicated to the performing and creative arts, March 11 – 15. All events are free and open to the public.
“For nearly two decades MIFA has developed and evolved into what it is today – a signature week, highlighting the excellence of our faculty and students in the arts,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, President of InterAmerican and North Campuses. “The festival welcomes and engages students, faculty, staff, and community members at large in the beauty of expression through various forms of art.”
MIFA highlights the diverse talent found at North Campus through concerts, readings, movies, exhibitions, theatrical and dance performances. This year, the festival theme is “Arts for Change”, which will be celebrated with a full day of activities, Thursday, March 14, including presentations and student activities that will highlight the role of arts in society and commend change-making through all forms of artistic expression. As part of the activities there will be a collection of non-perishable food items and hygiene products for Food Pantries.
This year’s MIFA lineup of activities includes:
Monday, March 11, at 11 a.m. (Lehman Theatre)
Opening ceremonies will kick off the week and offer a taste of Theatrical Improvisation and feature the Musical Theatre students performing a preview of April’s musical, The Theory of Relativity. There will be a reprise of the opening activities at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 12, at 10 and 11:30 a.m. (Studio Theatre, Room 5116)
An Organ Recital remembrance program will honor past teachers, family, and students.
Tuesday, March 12, at 9:50 a.m. (Room 2101, Library)
The Power of Words, a program that focus on poetry.
Wednesday, March 13, at noon (Bldg. 5, Breezeway)
The Falcon Brass Ensemble will perform recognizable Disney music themes.
Wednesday, March 13, at 5 p.m. (Bldg. 5, Breezeway) and then at 6 p.m. (Lehman Theatre)
The School of Entertainment and Design Technology’s Student Film Festival will begin with a light reception before presenting student-created movies in the Lehman Theatre.
Thursday, March 14, starting at 9:30 a.m. (Bldg. 5, Breezeway)
Official start of Arts for Change Day; morning activities will include performances, a gallery exhibit, and a student showcase focusing on the transformative nature of art. Presentations and performances will be at 10 and 11:15 a.m.
- 12:30 p.m. (Lehman Theatre): The Faculty Piano Recital will feature the world premiere of 14 original compositions, inspired by masterpieces of Latin American poetry, and written by Spanish Composer Rosa Maria Rodriguez Hernandez of the Conservatory of Carcaixent.
- 6 p.m. (Science Complex): This year’s Concert Under the Stars will include melodies from some of Classical Music’s most prominent composers, including Vivaldi, Mozart, and Beethoven. Special Guests and members of the South Florida Youth Symphony will perform side-by-side MDC musicians for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 Finale.
Friday, March 15, at 11:15 a.m. (Lehman Theatre)
The Closing ceremony will include performance and awards presentations for the MIFA poster, AXIS magazine cover, Music Composition, and Visual Arts.
Friday, March 15, at 12:30 p.m. (North Art Gallery)
This highly anticipated exhibition showcases the best works from North Campus’ visual arts students in sculpture, painting, drawing and design.
