Miami, Nov. 1, 2016 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Miami Book Fair, (MBF) the nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, is bringing back The Porch and it’s bigger and better than ever! This year, the ultimate outdoor urban hangout will feature live music, art, poetry, comedy, cabaret, games, a mobile story booth, food, craft beers, and more. Stop by every day to take part in a Silent Poetry Disco, admire the beautiful Living Walls from Andromeda District, immerse yourself in the street art photography murals by Andrew Kaufman and contribute to the Wynwood Coloring Book’s community coloring wall! Events will be held day and night from Sunday, Nov. 13, through closing day Sunday, Nov. 20. Unless otherwise noted, all events at The Porch are free.
“Open and green spaces contribute so much to our city’s vibrancy,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “The popularity of The Porch shows residents’ enthusiasm for more public gathering spots. The book fair always does a great job of bringing the community together and we look forward to joining them again this year to activate downtown in this pop-up gather space.”

Sunday, Nov. 13
@ 4 p.m. – The Porch opens with music, food trucks, giant outdoor games, community coloring walls, a silent poetry disco, ice cream, and craft beers.
@ 6 p.m. – Light up the walls like a street artist with Project Your Idea’s Digital Graffiti Experience using video projection mapping.
@ 7 p.m. – Welcome to Miami Book Fair 2016! It’s official – MBF is here! Celebrate the opening day with your fellow book lovers at our community BBQ on The Porch!
@ 7:30 p.m. – Music: MDC Live Arts presents Quantic Live featuring Jimetta Rose
Monday, Nov. 14
@ 6:30 p.m. – SEED Food and Wine Festival presents plant-based gourmet Tacos and Tequila Night!
@7:30 p.m. – Improv comedy showcase with Villain Theater, Chasing Tales, Comedy School Dropouts, and Front Yard Theater Collective.
Tuesday, Nov. 15
@ 7:30 p.m. – Movie on The Porch with Miami Film Festival: Free showing of Todos se van, based on the novel by Wendy Guerra (in Spanish with English subtitles). Followed by a conversation with Guerra.
Wednesday, Nov. 16
@ 6:30 p.m. – The Arts & Entertainment District in Miami lays down an Acoustic Carpet session featuring performances by Yoli Mayor, Javier Garcia, and Keith Johns.
Thursday, Nov. 17
@ 5 p.m. – Give Miami Day block party. The Miami Book Fair and the Miami Foundation join forces to celebrate people who give and their impact on nonprofits. Lulu’s Nitrogen Ice Cream pop-up will be serving delicious treats. Oscar Fuentes, aka The Biscayne Poet will be on-hand with his antique typewriter doling out poetry on demand
@ 6 p.m. – Its game night! Head over to the Points Over Pints table to challenge players into a battle of the board games, or join Villain Theater on stage as the host a Bingo night.
@ 7 p.m. – 6 Words Miami Improv: WLRN and Miami Book Fair celebrate the winners of this year’s 6 Words Miami competition, with a performance by the improv masters at Villain Theater. Each winner will read their six-word story aloud and Villain’s cast will turn that story into a 6-minute improv sketch
@ 8 p.m. – Noir at the Bar: It gets dark in the Magic City when Alex Segura emcees an evening with some of the best local mystery and crime writers, including Joe Clifford, Mike Creeden, M.J. Fievre, Fabienne Josaphat, Les Standiford, John Dufresne, Vicki Hendricks, Lynne Barrett, and Neliza Drew.
Friday, Nov. 18
@ 5 p.m. – Miami Book Fair Block Party and DJ Luan.
@ 6 p.m. – Make Your Own Notebook: Wynwood Letterpress and DIY blogger, Damask Love, will set up a pop-up work station to craft your very own composition book.
@ 6 p.m. – Domino Tournament: challenge friends and strangers to a bracket-style domino tournament.
@ 6:30 p.m. – Speak! Fridays will present vibrant performances combining poetry, art, music, and creative expression.
@ 7:30 p.m. – Circ X Variety Hour: Incorporating corporeal mime, street theater and acrobatics, Circ X’s performances are both provocative and outrageously funny.
@ 8:30 p.m. – Dance Party on The Porch! Close out the workweek and dance your way into the street fair weekend with live music on The Porch!
Saturday, Nov. 19

@ 2 p.m. – Teenage Wasteland with Wordier Than Thou: Revisit your awkward adolescence as local writers share their angst-ridden letters, poetry and more from their teen years.
@ 3 p.m. – Discussion and short dramatic reading of the award-winning play This is Modern Art with co-author Kevin Coval.
@ 4 p.m. – Miami Book Fair and WLRN celebrate #6WordsMiami. This year’s contest winners will read their six-word stories and the Villain Theater cast will turn them into six-minute sketches.
@ 5 p.m. – Live music by Bad Apples Brass Band.
Sunday, Nov. 20

@ 12 p.m. – Broad Comedy: Join some of the funniest female Florida writers, presented by Wordier Than Thou.

@ 2 p.m. – Bring your notepad or sketchbook and hang out with Andrew Kaufman, author, photographer and producer of I’m in Miami, Bitch! Series, alongside artists Luis Berros, aka STYLE of VO5 and FA (Free Agents)
@ 3 p.m. – Live music: Baby B strings
@ 3 p.m. – Turn Books into Flowers with artist Becky Quiroga
@ 4 p.m. – Celebrate the official launch of Orange Island Review’s third issue, which features poetry and art from high school students around the country.
@ 5 p.m. – Live music: Psychic Mirrors

Miami Book Fair
Widely recognized as the largest and finest literary gathering in the U.S., the Miami Book Fair’s eight-day festival features readings and conversation with the world’s most renowned authors and more than 200 booksellers and exhibitors across various genres and interests. Book lovers are also treated to culinary presentations, live music, dance and theater performances, interactive art projects, fun and educational activities for children, and more! In addition to the annual festival, the Miami Book Fair builds community and promotes reading and writing throughout the year with activities open to all, including creative writing courses taught by local and visiting authors, literary gatherings and happy hours and Read to Learn Books for Free, a partnership with The Children’s Trust that distributes more than 160,000 free books a year to children in Miami-Dade County.

Miami Dade College
Miami Dade College has a long and rich history of involvement in the cultural arts, providing South Florida with a vast array of artistic and literary offerings through its cultural affairs department, including the Miami Book Fair, the Miami Film Festival, MDC Live Arts performing arts series, the Cuban Cinema Series, and groundbreaking art exhibitions at the Museum of Art + Design (MOA+D) located inside the college’s historic Freedom Tower and art galleries at each campus.
