Produced by the MDC Kendall Campus Music Department, directed by Dr. Leo Walz and performed by music students and faculty, Side by Side by Sondheim is a perfect introduction to the work of composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim. His compositions have set the standard for modern American musical theater for the past five decades and his remarkable songwriting has earned him seven Tony Awards. From the streets of ancient Rome to the high-rise apartments of 1970’s Manhattan, his melodies create timeless and masterful pieces. The musical’s title is derived from the song “Side by Side by Side” from Sondheim’s 1970 musical comedy Company. Other featured songs include Follies, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone Can Whistle and Pacific Overtures, as well as the classics written with Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne and Richard Rodgers, among other musical theater greats. This impressive lineup demonstrates his exquisite craft and astounding creativity.
A well-known conductor and educator, Dr. Walz teaches music history and music theory at MDC Kendall Campus. He is the founder of The Alhambra Orchestra, Miami’s longest-lived and most active community orchestra, and works in various capacities with Miami Lyric Opera. Dr. Walz also frequently conducts in Eastern Europe and Central America. He holds a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Miami, and studied piano with Gordon DeBroder and Janet Landreth in his native Colorado.
Each season On Stage presents an exciting lineup featuring entertaining and culturally significant performances by accomplished artists and rising stars, produced by MDC faculty. On Stage encompasses each of the performing arts, from jazz and gospel music to classical and theatrical realism and experimental dance. Most performances take place at MDC Kendall Campus and include workshops, concerts and conferences by MDC faculty and staff, musicians and dancers, as well as visiting artists.
