MDC’s Jazz at Wolfson Series Presents Pianist Kemuel Roig Oct. 16

Miami, Sept. 25, 2019 – Miami Dade College (MDC) Wolfson Campus’ Arts and Philosophy Department continues its successful live jazz series, Jazz at Wolfson Presents, with Pianist Kemuel Roig, at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Wolfson Campus. All Jazz at Wolfson Presents concerts are free and open to the public.

At eight years old, Roig was accepted into the vocational art school Ñola Sahig in Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, to study classical piano and drums. His family moved to Miami in 2002 and two years later, at 16, he enrolled at MDC’s Wolfson Campus to study jazz under the direction of Dr. Michael Di Liddo and Michael Gerber. Along with MDC’s Hard Bop Jazz Ensemble, he was invited to participate in the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy. With this group he also won DownBeat magazine’s 2005 student competition.

After MDC, Roig earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Florida International University and a master’s degree in 2015 from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

Roig has toured, produced and recorded with numerous luminaries of contemporary jazz and other genres, including Arturo Sandoval, Al Di Meola, Ed Calle, Amaury Gutierrez, Ben-Hur Berroa and Aymée Nuviola, among others.

“I first met Kemuel as a high school dual enrolled student at MDC,” said Jazz at Wolfson Presents director and guitarist Dr. Di Liddo. “He was a bright-eyed, eager young pianist looking to better his skills. Kemuel immediately took to jazz by studying the repertoire and exploring the music of jazz greats. He has since gone on to perform with some famous musicians. I am very proud of his accomplishments and look forward to hearing more from him as his career continues to blossom and unfold.”
