Miami, Sept. 19, 2017 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) InterAmerican Campus and its School of Education will host the Love, Grow, Learn Conference on brain-based language disorders and educational methods to address them effectively. Presented in collaboration with Fundación Querer, a nonprofit that brings together professionals from scientific, academic and medical communities to improve the lives of children diagnosed with language-related disorders, the conference will take place from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27. Advances in brain research open the path to new ways of diagnosing disorders that affect language and communication and better solutions for educating children with those diagnoses. While neurologists often spearhead research on the early diagnosis of brain-based disorders, they seldom meet with educators to share advancements in the field. This conference will create a forum for professionals from scientific and medical communities to share insights from their research with educators in order improve the outcomes for children diagnosed with language-related disorders.
The Love, Grow, Learn Conference will feature panels on the neuroanatomy of language delays and discuss case studies highlighting successful approaches to educating children with disabilities. Speakers will include Dr. Sarah Woolley, professor of psychology, Columbia University; Dr. Steven Wolf, associate professor of clinical neurology, Mount Sinai Medical School; Patricia McGoldrick, associate director, Developmental Disability Center, Mt Sinai-Beth Israel Medical Center; Margarita Velasquez, speech therapist; and Dr. Patricia Martinez Alvarez, assistant professor of bilingual education, Columbia University.
MDC’s School of Education will also sponsor a resource fair for teachers and families of children with special needs.
