MDC’s Hialeah Campus Awarded Important Grant for Health Literacy Project

Miami, May 3, 2017Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Continuing Education and Professional Development was recently awarded a $5,000 grant to Hialeah Campus in support of MDC’s Health Literacy Project for a fifth year.  The Florida Blue Foundation, in partnership with the Florida Literacy Coalition, awarded the grant to recognize the achievements of the project.

MDC’s Health Literacy Project infuses health-related content into the curriculum of advanced-level classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Using the Staying Healthy book provided by the Florida Literacy Coalition as part of the grant, students learn English in a contextualized format.

The grant also supports project-based activities, such as health-related demonstrations where students present to their peers and the campus community. The assignments are an integral part of the course, helping to build students’ confidence and comfort levels when speaking English in public.
