MDC Wolfson Campus New Parking Facility Dedication with Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen

U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and U.S. Senator Bill Nelson were instrumental in passing legislation conveying federal property to MDC for the construction of this unique facility to be shared between MDC and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Miami, March 10, 2017 – To meet Miami Dade College (MDC) Wolfson Campus’ growth, the college has opened a new parking facility located next to the MDC building that houses New World School of the Arts. Through the steadfast support of MDC alumna and U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) this property previously utilized exclusively by the federal government was transferred to MDC to meet its expansion needs and enhance security for area federal employees. A special dedication ceremony will take place on the rooftop at 11 a.m., Friday, March 24.

The parking garage features seven floors and a total of 599 parking spaces, of which 118 spaces are reserved for Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons employees.  Federal employees from the U.S. Courts, U.S. Marshal Service, and FBI will also be utilizing this portion of the garage.  A separate and secured entry for federal employees is part of the building design. In addition to parking, the facility features a plaza with a green area and seating for students.

This project is the result of an unprecedented federal local partnership between MDC and the Bureau of Prisons of the Department of Justice. During the First Session of the 111th U.S. Congress, legislation in the form of the Miami Dade College Land Conveyance Act was introduced by Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen in the House of Representatives and U.S. Senator Bill Nelson in the U.S. Senate. Working with the South Florida Congressional delegation, Rep. Ros-Letinen spearheaded this effort to its successful passage in the House, and Sen. Nelson secured passage in the U.S. Senate. President Barack Obama signed the legislation into law on August 12, 2009.

The legislation authorized the conveyance of this parcel of land, previously a flat 47,500 square foot fenced parking lot for the construction of the new facility by MDC.
