Miami, Sept. 4, 2020 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will illuminate its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower in the colors of the Lebanese flag tonight at sunset in remembrance of the devastating explosion in Beirut on August 4.
The explosion a month ago, considered the most destructive single incident in Lebanon’s history, claimed the lives of at least 191 people, injured more than 6,000 and destroyed much of city. Rescue teams are still searching for casualties and survivors beneath the rubble.
Miami and Beirut are Sister Cities, a partnership created to stimulate economic growth, trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the cities. Comm. Ken Russell requested the special tribute.
