MDC Softball Player Megan Garfinkel Named 2017 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar

MIAMI, March 15, 2017 – Miami Dade College (MDC) Lady Sharks Softball Player Megan Garfinkel has been named to the 2017 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Class. She joins a select group of remarkable student-athletes who have been recognized for their contributions on and off the field.

Megan, a sophomore at MDC, is currently working toward  her AA Pathway to a major in Teaching.  On the field, she has contributed to helping the Lady Sharks place second in the 2017 NJCAA Region 8 Div. 1- Southern Conference with a 6-2 record.

As a freshman, Megan received several Florida College System Activities Association Athletics (FCSAA) awards. Juggling school and softball, she received many accolades including: 2016 FCSAA All-Academic Team 3.30 GPA & Higher, the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement 3.80-3.99 GPA, the Southern Conference All-Academic Team, and FCSAA All-Academic Team.

In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.   Alongside her teammates, Garfinkel helped students with special needs at Atlantis Academy, fed the homeless at the St. James Baptist Church, and participated in the Live Like Bella Childhood Cancer Foundation. At MDC, she participated in MDC’s Spooky Night for Kids, the Rumbamania Zumba-Thon, Leadership Workshop, and Shoebox Gifting during Thanksgiving.  In addition, she took part in a food drive at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Megan joins the company of 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Class member and former MDC Lady Shark teammate Erin Sundook.
