MDC Physical Therapist Assistant Program Celebrates 50 Years and Annual Wheelchair Challenge

Miami, Sept. 25, 2019 – In commemoration of National Physical Therapy Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in October, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Medical Campus will once again host its annual Wheelchair Challenge from 12 to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The Wheelchair Challenge aims to create awareness about physical disabilities and to help future health care professionals gain a better understanding and empathy for patients living with physical disabilities, especially those who are wheelchair bound. The race is open to students from all majors, who have to use a wheelchair to race through the campus’ Atrium. There will be food and prizes for first and second place.

MDC’s Wheelchair Challenge, which began eight years ago, also celebrates a special milestone. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Physical Therapist Assistant profession, as well as the MDC program, which was one of only two first started in the U.S.
