MDC North Campus to Host Virtual Forum Celebrating African American Women in Transportation

Miami, Feb. 11, 2021Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus’ School of Business and the Small Business Transportation Resource Center (SBTRC) will host the third annual Celebrating African American Women in Transportation Forum virtually on Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. The program will highlight the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Women in Transportation Initiative (WITI), designed to prepare women to become the nation’s future leaders by creating ladders of opportunity and small business economic competitiveness through careers, internships, strategic partnerships, and education. This event is free and open to the public.

For 14 years, MDC has partnered with USDOT Office of Small Business and served as the host site of the SBTRC, which provides an array of technical assistance to build the capacity of small and disadvantaged businesses. Partner agencies include AAR Corp., Port of Miami, Boeing Company, Miami International Airport, Bank United, Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, Florida Small Business Development Centers, and the U.S. Small Business Administration, among others.

“This long-standing partnership with USDOT and our community agencies offers the North Campus community a great opportunity through its educational programming, as well as internship opportunities,” said Fermin Vazquez, Interim North Campus President. “We are also excited to provide unique offerings to students who have an interest in careers in transportation and the dynamic field of transportation infrastructure.”

The program focuses on equipping business owners with the knowledge, education and tools necessary to manage their operations through counseling on business opportunities and educational workshops. The partnership carries out objectives that assists small and minority-owned businesses in obtaining transportation-related government contracts and subcontracts. The North Campus is especially focused on promoting internship opportunities, as well as educational programming, for women in college and through the Women in Transportation Initiative (WITI).
