MDC North Campus to Host Panel on China – Latin America Connection

Miami, June 29, 2011Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives (CLACI) will host a panel discussion on the growing importance of the China – Latin American connection within policy, economics, culture and history at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, July 14.

China and Latin America are two of the most prominent emerging regions in the world, and their economic collaboration is increasing rapidly. China is investing at an unprecedented pace large amounts of capital in infrastructure projects in Latin America, which in turn is selling large numbers of commodities to the Chinese market.

“North Campus has been an active convener of scholarly discussions on world affairs, in our endeavor to grow our students as engaged, global citizens,” saidNorth Campus President José A. Vicente.

Confirmed speakers include MDC North Campus Professor Theodore Syder; Professor Ariel Armony, executive director of CLAS; Professor Daniel Suman from the University of Miami and Professor Gonzalo Paz from George Washington University. Carlos Barrezueta, CLACI’s director, and Jim Yu, director of MDC’s Confucius Institute, will moderate the panel.

The panelists will discuss the strong economic links between China and Latin America, including trade policy, energy collaboration and accelerated capital investments. They will assess cultural similarities and differences between the regions and review historical and cultural ties, such as the influence of Chinese immigration to Latin America. The experts will also analyze issues of policy between the two regions, including matters of diplomacy and foreign policy, as well as examine mechanisms to increase institutional cooperation at the maritime and environmental level between the two countries.

This event is presented in collaboration with MDC’s Confucius Institute, MDC’s Office of International Education, Student Life at North Campus and the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Miami.
