MDC North Campus to again Host Florida Mortuary Operations Response System Preparedness Exercise April 11 – 13

Miami, April 9, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will again host the Florida Mortuary Operations Response System (FEMORS) Preparedness Exercise Wednesday through Friday, April 11 – 13. The important exercise will include a disaster site for fatality recovery operations, a disaster portable morgue, identification center, and a victim information center.

The FEMORS exercise is a collaboration between MDC’s School of Justice and School of Science and the University of Florida.  The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Florida Air National Guard Fatality Search and Recovery Team and the Miami Beach Police Department will also participate.

The State of Florida, in its disaster preparedness efforts, has collaborated to develop and implement protocols to respond to a mass fatality incident within its borders using trained personnel from multiple state and local agencies, as well as other specialized resources in the event of a human-made or natural catastrophic incident. The investigative and identification process in a mass fatality situation is a multidisciplinary endeavor requiring multiple forensic and medical specialists to come together rapidly often under adverse conditions.

MDC School of Justice
MDC’s renowned School of Justice at the North Campus has been training and educating public safety professionals for the past 41 years, domestically and internationally. More than 80 percent of all public safety professionals in Miami-Dade County have been trained at the School of Justice, which offers a Bachelor in Applied Science degree in public safety management with seven specialized tracks, associate degree in criminal justice, college credit certificates in homeland security and crime scene technology, certifications in basic law enforcement, corrections and firefighter, private security, and specialized executive leadership training and assessment services.

MDC Funeral Service Education Program
Under the auspices of MDC’s School of Science, the pioneering Funeral Service Education Program began in 1964 at the North Campus and has trained many funeral directors and embalmers who continue to serve families in their local neighborhoods and nationwide. Our program covers Funeral Service Sciences and the Funeral Service Arts. One of the unique aspects of our program is that our students have the opportunity to gain “hands on” experience on campus in our Embalming and Restorative Arts labs.
