Miami, Nov. 18, 2016- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Museum of Art + Design (MOA+D) will partner with Bridge Red Studios/Project Space to present Original Condition (El viento trae un extraño lamento), an exhibition in the swing/SPACE/Miami series. The site specific installation by artist Yanira Collado will be featured from Nov. 20, 2016 through Jan. 8, 2017 with an opening night celebration on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 4 p.m.
“Since its’ inauguration, swing/SPACE/miami will have supported 13 exhibitions/projects,” said Wanda Texon, Associate Curator at MOAD and Director of Campus Galleries. “It has garnered intense interest and participation in the selection process and positive reactions from visitors. The fast pace and flexibility of the series is directly linked to the exciting and ever changing landscape of contemporary art.”
MOA+D provides a platform to honor former alumni who have excelled in their respective artistic careers. swing/SPACE/miami aims to foster opportunities for further engagement with the next generations of young and emerging artists. The work of the three finalists will be exhibited throughout the 2016-2017 season in locations outside of its home base at the MOAD located in the Historic Freedom Tower, to a wider more diverse audience by collaborating directly with artist run spaces, public venues and alternative spaces around Miami-Dade to present the selected projects.
Organized by MOA+D, program participants were nominated by current and former MDC and New World School of the Arts (NWSA) faculty and selected by an independent curatorial advisory committee composed of art professionals. From a total of more than 40 participants, the committee selected three singular artists to present solo exhibitions based on a wide variety of criteria. Artists in the 2016-2017 season include Collado as well as Rafael Domenech, and Roberto Gomez.
Incorporating various sculptural elements whose presence both forms and informs by use of semiotic fluidity, and by collapsing the past, present, time and space, Collado creates a repository of transference through the use of reclaimed building materials; paper, textiles, enamels, photography and other ephemera. Through this process, she constructs a palimpsest based on an ontological set of principles whose presence is both improvisational and eternal.
Collado is an interdisciplinary artist interested in social dichotomy concepts that allude to entropy and restoration. Collado’s work is the intersection of constructivism and vernacular semantics; construction materials, textiles and reclaimed literary texts. Her work incorporates materials with inherent geographic histories, processes and economies that imply varying degrees of personalized and public memory.
